Located in Shenzhen's Qianhai-Dachan Bay Port Zone, the Tencent Global Headquarters campus comprises five neighborhood blocks. Designed by Perkins&Will, Block 05 West integrates a multi-program set of facilities—Mingwan School (private), Qianwan School (a nine-year public school), a community activity center, and a comprehensive transit hub—responding systematically to the district's combined needs across education, culture, sport, and daily mobility. Under complex program demands, the scheme relies on a clear, concise spatial and massing strategy to form a distinct yet harmoniously interwoven architectural ensemble. As the educational centerpiece of this cluster, Mingwan School was jointly founded by the Chen Yidan Foundation, Tencent, and Shanghai Jingzhi. The school provides full-time education from kindergarten through high school, with boarding options available for senior students. Drawing on deep insights into the future of interdisciplinary, personalized, and practice-based learning, Perkins&Will has designed a forward-thinking, innovative learning community on the vibrant "Penguin Island".

While public space in Thailand is still mostly shaped by private entrepreneurs rather than by urban planning or local government. Northgate Spirit is a creative extension project from the North Gate Jazz Co-op, a street-jazz venue that has been part of Chiang Mai's old town for over 19 years. Located on Ratchapakinai Road within the inner moat, the space takes into account the creation of a commercial area that can connect with and support public spaces accessible to all.
The Grand Cypress Resort in Orlando, Florida was for decades a golf destination, known for its Jack Nicklaus–designed courses and private villas. The property was reimagined as Evermore, a family-focused alternative to traditional park lodging. Bordering Disney World, it provides access to all major attractions; however, its defining feature is a new eight-acre freshwater lagoon bordered by beaches and framed by a new "town" anchored by a new Conrad hotel to the north, with flats and homes flanking the east and west. Our task was to design South Beach's primary gathering and entertainment venues, linking the lagoon to the golf experience. Of our four projects, The Landing serves as the resort's social and operational heart—welcoming guests at arrival, providing market, dining, fitness, gaming, and bar experiences, and acting as the gateway between beach and golf. Every aspect is organized to maximize views, comfort, and connection.

Shamballa, an 8-hectare open-air laboratory and research site dedicated to sustainable living and advanced architectural 3D printing, was inaugurated on June 8, 2026, in the hills of the Emilia-Romagna region in northern Italy. The project is a collaboration between WASP, a 3D printing technology company, and Olfattiva, an aromatherapy and botanical perfumery company, hosting a makers laboratory, a medicinal botanical garden, and "Itaca," a self-sufficient farm built using 3D printing. The building was designed as a model for 3D-printed construction, representing a certified and replicable structure. The outdoor areas host research and development centers, forming an experimental "ecosystem" to develop new ideas in bio-construction and sustainable living, along with automated gardens, rainwater harvesting systems, and initiatives focused on micro circular economies.

Produced on an industrial scale since the 19th century, steel has profoundly transformed the way we build. The combination of iron and small amounts of carbon has given rise to a material capable of combining mechanical strength, relative lightness, and constructive precision, making possible some of the major achievements of modern engineering and architecture. From skyscrapers and bridges to facades, roofs, and industrialized systems, few materials have had such a significant impact on shaping the built environment.

Heatherwick Studio and SPPARC have unveiled the first phase of the transformation of Olympia, a historic exhibition complex in West London, into a mixed-use cultural destination. Originally opened in 1886, the Victorian landmark is undergoing a large-scale redevelopment that aims to reconnect the 14-acre site with the surrounding city through new public spaces, cultural venues, hospitality programs, and commercial facilities. The opening is marked by the completion of a new public canopy, which introduces elevated pedestrian circulation and serves as a gateway into the broader master plan while framing new views across Olympia's historic roofscape. The intervention forms part of a broader master plan that will be implemented through 2026 and 2027.

Designing for Stray Cities: Architecture Beyond the Human

Architecture continues to draw cities as though humans occupy them alone. Plans trace circulation routes, zoning maps assign functions, and buildings are evaluated according to human comfort, safety, and efficiency. Walking through cities across India and Southwest Asia reveals something much more complex. Dogs sleep beneath market stalls, monkeys move across rooftops, birds nest in temple towers and mosque façades, and insects pollinate urban landscapes hidden in plain sight. These species are woven into daily urban life as consistently as human occupants. Streets, courtyards, roofs, drainage systems, markets, and vacant lots are already occupied by multiple species simultaneously. Architectural thinking has been slower to account for this reality.

After Artemis II's return to Earth, NASA unveiled a new phased plan to establish a Moon Base. Although most of the media's attention went to rockets, budgets, and geopolitical competition, a quieter question was lingering for architects in the background: How can a human being actually live on the surface of the Moon, and for how long? The establishment of a permanent human presence on the Moon marks a fundamental shift in space exploration that requires a new architectural paradigm. In their presentation, NASA officials suggested the strategy would drift away from highly constrained, vehicle-dependent environments toward autonomous, site-adaptive, and eventually permanently habitable structures.

The Telekom Tower, southeast of Konstanz's historic city centre, quite literally stands out from its surroundings. For a long time, this 1970s building stood in stark contrast to its urban fabric, not only for its height but also for its architectural language; it was perceived as an almost alien presence within the city. Converting the vacant office tower into a residential building offered the opportunity for a retrospective integration, and, in a sense, for urban healing. In this context, adaptive reuse has an impact that extends far beyond the immediate construction task. The conversion not only preserves the embodied energy in the existing structure but also avoids the CO₂ emissions that a new building would have generated. The typology of the high-rise itself represents a forward-looking solution for a dense city with a high proportion of green space. The decision to retain the building's substance and bring it to life with apartments gives it a new face. Its original DNA remains legible, yet its impact has been fundamentally reinterpreted.

Delivered in Spring 2025, this residential renovation within Toronto's historic Candy Factory Lofts reinterprets a 1907 confectionery plant as a contemporary home shaped by layers of industrial, cultural, and spatial memory. Located in downtown Toronto, the building has served multiple lives: first as a textile mill, later as a site of labor activism, and, in the 1990s, as one of the city's earliest large-scale adaptive-reuse projects, helping reintroduce residential life to the urban core. Beneath this industrial narrative lies an older geography: the Carrying Place, an Indigenous trade route used by the Wendat, Seneca, and Mississaugas of the Credit, whose presence continues to inform the land. The client brief called for a highly efficient, storage-rich home that preserved the openness and character of the original loft while supporting contemporary patterns of living.

The JIC Jing'An Center is an urban regeneration project that integrates mixed-use functions (offices, retail, and residential) and is situated adjacent to the Nanjing West Road commercial area in Shanghai's Jing'An District. There, traditional streetscapes coexist alongside large-scale business hubs. The Center comprises a 180-meter-tall super-high-rise tower. Preserved and revitalized historic buildings are retained and incorporated at the lower level across the site. The project focuses on preserving historical context while integrating modern functions, presenting a model that transcends the dichotomy of "preservation vs. development." Shanghai was once home to dense clusters of traditional communal housing known as 'Lilong', where people used the alleyways between buildings as communal living spaces. This project adopts the concept of a 'three-dimensional Lilong', extending its richness and vibrancy in a vertical fashion. Centered on a three-dimensional circulation route linking the preserved low-rise buildings to the sky gardens and the lower and middle tower section lounges, the design draws the city's bustle to the upper floors. By seamlessly connecting open spaces that encourage diverse user interactions, the proposal presents a new model for urban regeneration: a next-generation landmark that passes the city's memories on to the future.

The reflection of infinity enters a redevelopment of a park in the city of Gyumri in northern Armenia. The orientation of the pavilion is towards the Sev berd, an important nineteenth-century fort, and the events in the history of this place. The pavilion serves as an observation point covered with a mirroring element. This reflection connects the statue of Mother Armenia to another important element, representing in this way the strength, resilience, and protectiveness of the Armenian people. The pavilion could serve as a symbolic reflection of these qualities, emphasizing the idea of a mirrored image of strength and infinite possibilities. The design could incorporate reflective surfaces and a black painted interior to symbolize the connection with the black tuff. The reflection of this element creates a mysterious symbolism capable of regenerating the entrance of this space towards new perspectives. At the same time, the pavilion becomes a dynamic game for the many children who visit this park.

Unlike many other activities that now take place entirely in digital environments, the final result of work in the architecture, engineering, and construction industry does not remain on a screen. Files become buildings, models transform into structures, and decisions made during the design process ultimately shape streets, neighborhoods, and entire cities. A building often lasts for decades, sometimes centuries, and the impacts of the choices made during its development extend far beyond the moment of delivery, influencing the daily lives of thousands of people.

Over the past decade, the definition of a performing arts venue has shifted. No longer singular-purpose destinations, today's cultural facilities are expected to operate as flexible, revenue-generating, community-centered ecosystems. This evolution has challenged architects, operators, and owners to rethink not just how venues are designed, but how they function over time.

Heat as a Design Partner: Trees, Soil, and Wind Corridors as Cooling Infrastructure

"By 2050, almost every child in the world — nearly 2.2 billion children — will be exposed to frequent heat waves." UNICEF's warning is often read as a public health forecast, but it is also a challenge to architecture and the way cities are built. As extreme heat intensifies across Asia, Europe, and beyond, thermal comfort should not be reduced to merely an indoor service delivered by machines. Air-conditioning has become a life-support system for many cities, especially in dense, humid, and rapidly urbanizing regions. Yet to rely on it as the default answer is to treat heat as something that can simply be moved elsewhere (and in the process generating extra heat) — expelled from interiors into streets, service alleys, energy grids, and the atmosphere. Its expansion increases energy demand, produces waste heat, and reinforces unequal access to comfort.

BIG–Bjarke Ingels Group was selected to design the campus of a new STEM university in Arkansas, United States, on a site located near Bentonville's downtown, formerly home to Walmart's headquarters. The project comprises three buildings occupying two city blocks and was designed in collaboration with Polk Stanley Wilcox Architects, who will serve as the Architect of Record. The campus comprises around 422,000 square feet (nearly 39,200 square meters), including green spaces, public squares, an academic building, a makerspace, and a student residence. While the project was recently unveiled, the university intends to welcome its first class of students in 2029.

In the late 16th century, the gardens of Villa Medici, transformed under Cardinal Ferdinando de' Medici, were organized around the celebrated system of the Carrés (historically known as I Quadrati): sixteen orthogonal compartments structured within a rigorous geometric plan. While the perimeter avenues expressed the language of Medici magnificence, the interior of each Carré supported a highly productive agricultural regime. Archival descriptions confirm the cultivation of vegetables, herbs, and fruit trees; plants valued not only for their rarity and beauty but also as instruments of political identity and territorial order. The Medici treated horticulture as both aesthetic display and economic infrastructure.

The context of the ongoing war marks Ukraine's place in the international consciousness. Architecture, however, most often transcends the span of a human life and can therefore be a tool for imagining the future. The practice of architectural design, whether speculative, conceptual, or practical, serves as a means of bringing to life ways of living and interacting beyond our current realities. In this selection of conceptual projects submitted by ArchDaily readers, we see material, spatial, and symbolic strategies that seek to address contemporary contexts in the residential, educational, and commercial sectors.
