A Relaxing Holiday Retreat in the Woods is a Respite from City Life
A wood-clad vacation house in The Netherlands with seamless views of the natural landscape is the modern escape we all need right now.
HofmanDujardin designed this holiday retreat surrounded by pine trees in Tonden, Netherlands. Named after its location, Villa Tonden offers respite from city life with its framed views of the surrounding natural landscape. The design comprises three wood-clad, house-shaped structures laid out to fit within a small clearing of land while separating out distinct spaces inside the house.
Each façade benefits from its own terrace that feels like an extension of the house. Sliding glass doors open up the interiors to the outdoor spaces for seamless visual connections.
The entrance volume, which features a reading window, opens up into three directions with the living room aligned with the sun. Sliding glass doors flank the main living area which houses the kitchen, dining room and living room. Whether the doors are open or not, they make the space feel much larger without any visual disruption.
The high pitched roof is highlighted by the visible wooden trusses that draw the eyes up.
The children’s bedroom includes four built-in bunk beds that feel like cozy nooks they can escape to.
