This has to be dealt with at both the micro-level by the work assigned to individuals and the macro-level on the design of the workspace in order to facilitate collaboration and innovation.  With this in mind, Shaastra - Summit 2021, in accordance with its theme Archi-Tech has partnered up with L&T Construction for our flagship competition for this year. “Innovation Hub Design Challenge” aims to harvest the power of design to create commercial facilities that act as workplaces and community hubs to instill an innovative spirit in the organization and thus build a healthy company culture. How should a campus integrate a work-life balance through its design?  What would be the optimal layout to minimize the time spent by the workforce in commuting and maximize productivity? How would we be able to satisfy our aim while keeping sustainability in mind? There are endless questions, but there are endless possibilities as well. This competition challenges you to use modern-day architectural practices like sustainability and adaptability in design and planning, to promote the integration of social, economic, and physical aspects involved in developing the innovation hub of the future. The use of technology for designing, analyzing, and visualizing will be highly encouraged. Client and Project Brief The client is an American Multinational headquartered in California. The company’s operations in India began in the year 2000. Currently, the client has leased multiple office spaces in multiple cities across the country. They would like to consolidate and shift all the employees in a single campus which would foster Innovation and bring in a sense of community. The proposed development is envisaged to be future-ready and would cater to the workspace requirements for the next decade. Site Context The client bought a land parcel of about 31.0 acres at a Govt approved Special Economic Zone(SEZ) in Chennai. The site is imaginary and the participants can assume context. The site layout is attached. The development would include office/ workplace, canteen and amenities, customer experience centre, product development centre (innovation hub), service building, parking facility, and security blocks.  Design Considerations The design shall be based on the modern, urban work environment with a green building concept providing functional business space and amenities. The Campus Master planning shall have international benchmarking with regard to landscape design and planning principles. The emphasis shall be on community building and how the design encourages interaction. The design shall comply with green building standards to achieve LEED gold rating, contributing to enhancing the energy efficiency, optimization of resources, while reducing the maintenance cost and waste generation. The development can be separate blocks or combined as per the design narrative and the total area of development shall be approx. 3.5 million sq ft including all ancillary facilities and cater to a working population of 20,000. Ergonomically designed work area with maximum employee comfort shall be considered. The parking shall accommodate 2500 car slots and 5000 two-wheeler slots, 20 bus bay and lay off area. The same can be planned in the basement/ surface parking, making it convenient for the employees. Standalone Multilevel car parking is not preferred. The traffic circulation shall be designed for a congestion-free inflow and outflow of traffic. The pedestrian circulation shall connect all structures in the Masterplan weaving the entire campus. The amenity area shall consist of a food court and community spaces. The community spaces shall also include a medical center, gymnasium, changing rooms and locker rooms for male and female associates separately, recreation area, convenience stores, daycare, and crèche facility, etc. The multi-cuisine food court/ canteen shall cater to a one-time seating capacity of 1/3rd of the entire headcount. Eligibility:

  • We invite all architects, students, engineers, product designers, thinkers, companies, organizations interested in the mission of the competition to submit their ideas. No professional qualifications are necessary.
  • The minimum age for participants is 17.

Team Composition:

  • Individual participants will also be allowed for the competition.
  • Team registrations are allowed with a maximum size of 4 participants.
  • Each team is allowed to make only a single submission per round for the competition.

Timeline:

Stage One

  • Registrations and submissions open on 14th Jan'2021 
  • Registrations and submissions close on 5th Feb'2021, 11:59 pm

Further details about 'Stage Two' will be communicated to all the shortlisted participants.

Submission Guidelines:

  • Registrations and submissions are only accepted through D2C.
  • Participants and teams alike can make only one submission.

For Stage 1:

The participants may submit their entries providing an explanatory presentation for: 

  • Design Narrative – Competitors approach to sustainability and adaptability in design and planning
  • Identification of key social, economic, and physical aspects that the participant is proposing to integrate while evolving the design
  • Designer’s interpretation/analysis of the overall design problem

Guidelines to be followed:

  • The submission should contain only a single PDF
  • Text, sketches, and artistic renders can be used 
  • This shall not exceed ten A3 size sheets 
  • The file size should not exceed 20 MB
  • The document should be of good resolution.

The shortlisted participants will move to the second round of the competition.

For Stage 2:

Participants will be required to submit the following:

  1. Design Basis Report - This should be formatted as a PDF that includes an explanatory presentation demonstrating:
    • How the objective of the competition was achieved?
    • How the design was evolved as per the design narrative along with social, economic, and physical aspects identified in Stage 1?
    • How was the technology used for designing, analyzing, and visualizing the proposal?
  2. Rendered site plan/ master plan showcasing:
    • Integration of Built Environment with Landscape design.
    • The weaving of vehicular and pedestrian circulation.
  3. Plans, Elevation, and Sections for Office, Cafeteria, Customer Experience Centre and Innovation Hub
  4. Perspective Views/ Walkthrough

Additional requirements and mentoring of Stage - 2 will be provided to the shortlisted entries.

Data Protection:

  • The participants hereby grant Shaastra, IIT Madras, and L&T construction a non-exclusive right to use the submitted photo free of any charge for non-commercial purposes for the Shaastra, IIT Madras web page, social media platforms, and printed publications. 
  • Participants must be able to provide proof of their identity, age, and place of residence in such a way that Shaastra, IIT Madras can check and disqualify entries for any breach of rules. 
  • Shaastra, IIT Madras reserves the right to modify the competition schedule if deemed necessary.
  • The participant will be disqualified for the breach of any of the competition rules. In such a case the organizer's decision will be final and binding on all participants.

  •  By participating in this contest, the participant declares and warrants that: 
    • The material is their own.
    • No one else apart from the participant has the copyright or any intellectual property right on the submitted work.

  • The participant remains the owner of the copyright of the submitted work(s). 
  • The illustrations will be credited appropriately each time it is reproduced or communicated to the public by Shaastra, IIT Madras, and L&T construction.
