DxD Day Student Competitions: Inspired by Norma Merrick Sklarek
Registration Deadline: Mar 10, 2023; Submission Deadline: Mar 10, 2023 DxD: Norma Merrick Sklarek Day celebrates inclusivity in design-related professions! This free Block Party event hosted on March 25th, 2023 will include a student competition of an essay and graphic design work, and will award more than $5000 in prizes! This competition will showcase the intellectual and design talents of students ages 6-18, and will award prizes to the top submissions selected through a jury for essays and a public voting on the graphic work on the day of the event. All graphic design submissions will be printed (at no cost to the student) and exhibited during the event for public voting, after which prize winners will be announced.Students may submit in either or both competition categories, and multiple entries are allowed. FOR ESSAY SUBMISSION:Essays should consider Norma Merrick Sklarek, her history and work, as well as impact on the architecture community and Los Angeles. Questions you might consider in your essay include: What do you find most inspiring about Norma? What is your favorite building designed by Norma, and why? How does learning about Norma's career help you consider what career path you might want to pursue?You can submit your essay in one of the following categories:Grade 1 – 4 (essay should be minimum 100 words but no longer than 300 words)Grade 5 – 8 (essay should be minimum 300 words but no longer than 500 words)Grade 9 – 12 (essay should be minimum 750 words but no longer than 1000 words). FOR GRAPHIC DESIGN WORK SUBMISSION:1. A graphic design image that includes the letters ‘DxD’. 2. This graphic/image may be a photo, drawing, painting, digital image, mixed media, or any other original artwork that is created solely by the student. 3. Graphics inspired by Norma Merrick Sklarek buildings or designs are highly encouraged. 4. The graphic should be 1080px wide and tall, in square format. 5. Image/graphic must be created by a student aged 6-18 with no other help. 6. Images should be in .jpg, .png, .tif, or .pdf format. 7.
