Registration Deadline: Apr 28, 2020; Submission Deadline: Apr 28, 2020 Competition Brief:  POST Houston, the adaptive reuse of downtown Houston’s former Barbara Jordan Post Office, is proud to launch SUPERDESIGN FOR SUPERFURNITURE, a nation-wide furniture design competition open to all students of art, graphic design, industrial design or interior architecture and architecture. OMA, in collaboration with Gin Design Group, has created 8 monolithic steel masses that function as “super furniture” on the outdoor terraces that once functioned as the Post Office’s loading docks. These pieces of super furniture have been designed to be a steel canvas for graphic art; they are intended to imbue the formerly industrial loading docks with a welcoming playfulness. There are no limitations as to the theme, but participants should develop a design narrative in keeping with the design philosophy of the project. The winner’s work will be considered for fabrication and be feature in the 550,000-square-foot mixed-use commercial hub, expected to open its doors at the beginning of 2021. Located in Houston’s Theater District, POST Houston, designed by OMA’s New York office, aims to establish a new cultural and commercial hub in downtown Houston by transforming an industrial post office building with world class design. The winner’s creation will be part of the first functional art installation at this renovated civic landmark.
