Suzdal Dacha

A contemporary take on a traditional Russian country house.

Suzdal Dacha

Architecture firm: FORM

Completion year: 2017 – 2019

Project location: Suzdal, Russia

A country house that was restored by architects from FORM architecture firm is located in the center of the historical Russian town of Suzdal, on the banks of the Kamenka River. The idea behind the project was to preserve the history of the site and create a picturesque view overlooking the Kremlin on the opposite bank of the river.

The renovation emphasized the original building’s character and allowed the architects to rethink the ensemble in a new way.

Traditional decor contrasts with a sleek black metal terrace. The minimalist white structure reduces the historicism of the wooden parts, although a wood-carved column adds a playful element.

The house is a place of leisure that offers a break from busy city life. The main inspiration for the project was taken from traditional Russian country houses known as dachas. Random pieces of furniture taken from city apartments or given by friends form the house’s distinctive and laid-back image.

Works of art and an impressive library give a personal touch and make the space feel cozy.
