Quiet quitting is making all of us reevaluate our tolerances. This “trend” is all about giving voice to disengage with anything that is no longer making us happy and tiring us out. And while quiet quitting was introduced due to the pandemic-induced work burnout, it is relevant to many more areas of our life outside of work. It’s time to start taking the quiet quitting route for our home space as well and start to phase out some interior design trends. Of course, trends come and go, and in the end taste is subjective, so apply this method only to trends that don’t personally make you feel happy, and true to yourself anymore. So, if you are in the mood for some reassessing when it comes to past interior design trends, check out which old trends we will be quiet quitting this year.

Interior Design Trends We Are Quiet Quitting
This year is all about slowing down and reassessing your needs, as well as your home’s needs. It’s also all about letting your personality show in your home design and making the space a more accurate reflection of you. So, don’t be afraid to change things up during this new year and let go of things and trends that don’t spark joy (as Marie Kondo would say). Here are some trends we think of leaving behind this year.

#Open Floor Plans
While the open floor plan is quite a fan favorite, it’s not for everyone. It may be a great layout if you are living in a limited space, but if you are doing everything from your home – working, sleeping, entertaining – it may not be the best decision. An open floor plan can become redundant and create a blur of what is where. The solution? Separate rooms or a broken plan. A broken plan is a subdivided space with a physical partitions, something like a midway point between open and separate. This helps to allow different members of the family to inhabit one space without being a distraction to one another. It will also help to give structure to the space and give it a cozier vibe.

#All White
Yes, all white or a greige palette can be sleek and minimalistic. However, it often gives off the feeling of being devoid of any fun or personality. It’s like living in a pristine home catalog page, rather than your very own space. If you don’t enjoy eclectic styles or colorful rooms, there is still a way to bring some fun to this aesthetic. But too much white, gray, and beige are just kind of depressing in a space. It gives off the vibe as if nobody truly lives here. So, this year try to incorporate some color into the space. That can be done through paint or interesting, unique pieces of furniture, as well as art.

#TV-Centered Rooms
Screens are all around us, and truth be told, it’s kind of tiring. However, they are a central part of our daily lives, as well as for our evenings. However, if your whole space setup is just a bed or sofa facing a big screen, then it’s impossible to do anything else but stare into it. So, this year we are trying to get away from this setup. Even if your space is small, try to find a way to make it more interactive. Don’t let the screen be the dominating element of the room. Maybe place your sofas facing each other, or get a lounge chair. Make the space comfortable for talking and spending quality time with each other or yourself.

#Matching Furniture
2023 is all about showing personality in your space and making it a reflection of you. That’s why we are forgetting about matching furniture from now on. While having some matching pieces isn’t bad at all, having your whole living room/bedroom set be matching isn’t ideal. It lacks personality, looks outdated, and feels cold somehow. So, it’s a good idea to mix it up. Plus, mixing and matching furniture can be both cost-friendly, unique and effective. Look for individual furniture pieces that can stand alone and still bring something to the space.

#Fast Fashion Furniture
Fast fashion style furniture is out. 2023 is seeing sustainable, vintage pieces are having a comeback. This is due to a both economical and environmental reasons. Buying cheap, trendy furniture that will go out of style in a couple of months or will break just isn’t it. It’s bad for the planet, and it doesn’t bring a lot of personality to your home. This year, even if you are buying new furniture, there will be a lot more interest in design and materials that have longevity. Timeless items that are built to last.

#Floating Shelves
There was a time when every post you saw online had some pretty floating shelves in the background (or center stage) with a couple of carefully curated knick-knacks, magazines, and books. However, people have started to catch on that while an open shelving concept is beautiful and does create a feeling of openness to the space, it is hard to sustain. You need to take a lot more time in making everything organized as everything is on display. Open floating shelves are just way too much maintenance. Just the dusting alone is tiring. While one or two shelves if fine, it’s time to forget about this trend and invest in some beautiful closed cabinets.

#Non-Functional Objects
If you have limited space, then you are limited when it comes to decorative objects. So, with that in mind, this year we are letting go of furniture and decorative options that lack function. It’s time to add items that add both visual intrigue and have a purpose. And if they are multifunctional then even better! There truly is no need to clutter your space with pointless things, that have no function and just take up space and collect dust. This year is about being mindful, so we are quitting non-functional objects.
