The staff sanatorium of Huayi Group is located in the city center of Yangpu District, Shanghai, China, close to Yangpu Bridge. The owner hopes to use this geographical advantage to create a multi-functional building that integrates staff sanatorium and commerce along the street.
In the initial survey, it was discovered that the site was small and crowded with the Shanghai Red House Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital built in 1884, the Shanghai Yangpu District Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital, and several old houses. There is a large old-fashioned alley around the plot, and the environment is very shabby and chaotic. Therefore, how to continue the "Hutong cultural characteristics", preserve the "Shanghai city memory", and shape a new urban space has become the focus of this project.
In the design process, we stacked several functions together to form a rectangular parallelepiped, which is deployed along the long side of the project (Meizhou Road). The shape creates a sense of stability and order in the chaotic environment; in contrast with the tough boundary, we The use of a central green space on the inside of the site softens the barriers between the three "neighbors"-Shanghai Red House Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital (west), Shanghai Yangpu District Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital (south), and old residences (north).
The sanatorium and the commerce are vertically superimposed according to their respective functional characteristics. The first floor of the building is the commerce along the street, forming a base, occupying the extended surface of the street as much as possible, and at the same time becoming a natural barrier for the central green space. The length and thickness of the building allow us to create "streets", "alleys" and "courtyards" in it. The volume of the building decreases layer by layer to form more terraces and courtyards. The second floor is a clinic, the third to fifth floors are staff sanatorium, and there are a total of 44 rooms in the rest house. This method of segmentation effectively eliminates the pressure of the individual building form. The height of the base is close to the height of the alley on the opposite side, and the staggered volume at the top forms a response to the urban space texture.
