VDF products fair: Wireframe Sofa by Sam Hecht and Kim Colin for Herman Miller is characterised by its thin, lightweight structure that supports contrasting large, soft cushions.

Wireframe Sofa's external structure takes its cues from metal baskets, which Hecht and Colin describe as "intriguing because they have the ability to create structure with very little mass". It was developed to offer a contemporary, flexible and durable sofa suited to both work and domestic settings.

The seat can be made as a two- or three-seater sofa or as a chair and ottoman configuration, and is available with a selection of frame colours and upholstery options.

A key feature of the Wireframe Sofa's design is that it is flexible and easily manoeuvrable. The external structure exists as a separate volume to the cushions and also makes the seat much lighter than a typical sofa, so it can be easily "swung around".

By separating the cushions from the external wire structure in this way, users can also replace, change and clean them.

"Whether at home or in the office, furniture needs to work harder these days," explained Hecht and Colin, founders of design studio Industrial Facility.

"It's genuinely surprising when a sofa cannot be swung around to watch a film through a projector, or be moved from one room to another by fitting easily through a standard door frame," it continued. "We become disillusioned if a piece can't be cleaned easily, or a cushion cannot be replaced or recovered."

"Modern living seems to rely on a balance of informality and structure, temporality and permanence. A lot like the humble wire basket."
