How to paint with watercolors?

First off, naturally, you need your supplies. Watercolor paint, paintbrushes, watercolor paper and two jars of water – one for rinsing your brushes and one for the paint itself. In general, there are a few basic watercolor techniques every beginner needs to know. So, we are going to give you a run down of what they are and how to use them.

Wet-on-wet watercolor techniques

In order to learn how to use this technique, get a paintbrush, dip it in water and draw two rectangles on the paper. Then dab some moistened paint on the brush and slide it through the rectangle from side to side. In the second rectangle just dab the paintbrush on the paper. That way, you will see how the paint reacts on the wet paper and you will know which technique to use.

Wet-on-dry watercolor technique

This technique is used to achieve more defined lines. Your paper remains dry and you paint on it with moistened paint on a big paintbrush. Try the technique with different amounts of water for the paint, that way you can see the difference in the transparency of the colors.

Gradient color technique for easy watercolor paintings

Mix two colors side by side, For example, take red and orange and mix each with water – the ratio should be 50/50 water to paint. Paint on the paper first using just orange the clean your brush. Then grab a little bit of red and mix it with your orange paint. Keep painting on the paper where you left off with the orange paint. Try and keep it gradual and subtle. Keep adding a bit more red to your orange paint and keep painting gradually until your strip of color has turned into pure red. This technique is very helpful when drawing skies or ocean waves.

Building up color technique

On a palette, drop a bit of water and concentrated paint right next to it. Dab you brush into the water just a bit and make a few strokes on the paper. Add a little drop of paint to the water, dab the paintbrush and keep making strokes on the paper. Keep doing the same thing, adding more paint to the water. That way you color with gradually become darker on the paper.

If you are a beginner a good place to start is a watercolor landscape. The gradual mixture of colors is easy to achieve if you just follow the tutorial we provided. You can easily create a beautiful ocean landscape. All you need to do is mix shades of blue to create the waves and then mix some yellow and orange to recreate a sunset sky. Another good idea for beginners is to try painting animals, flowers and different objects to practice your watercolor techniques.

If you have a bit more experience with watercolor, on the other hand, you can move on to more intricate paintings. Full on paintings of landscapes with details are absolutely gorgeous, but, naturally, take more time. Furthermore, you can still paint flowers or animals, but focus on the details a bit more. This will make your paintings more realistic and beautiful.
