Why Did We Like It?

Made from safe, non-toxic natural fire starters, this product is an excellent choice to make if you want to stay away from using anything artificial. We are also big fans of fireplaces, and we keep the fire on throughout winter.

This firewood works perfectly for our fireplace as well as an outdoor campfire. Harvested from logging waste, rest assured that no live or endangered tree was cut down for you to enjoy the warmth.

Another essential feature is that it burns even when it is wet. Often because of the snow, it is challenging to keep wood dry, and this was an added advantage that we all appreciated.

What Could’ve Been Better?

Our only issue is that the amount of sap on every fatwood differs from box to box. The sap is essentially the sticky material which helps in starting a fire. For some boxes, the process is pretty simple, while for others, it took us time to get the fire going.

Pros
  • Natural fire starter
  • Can be used for a whole range of things
  • Completely natural
  • Made from pine trees
Cons
  • Inconsistency in the amount of sap
  1. Pine Mountain StarterLogg

We were looking for a product that will light up instantly with no kindling or rolled-up newspaper needed. The Pine Mountain StarterLogg fulfilled our needs. You can now relax or sit back and chill with your friends and family, while these firewoods keep everyone warm and cozy.

Why Did We Like It?

This product has been made from real hardwood and has nothing artificial mixed along with it. So, it is perfect for indoor as well as outdoor use – you can take it out for fishing, hunting, and camping excursions.

To add to it, the blocks can be split according to your needs and then put into the fire. They are also not heavy and can easily be transferred.

We were impressed to find out that our fire logs burned cleaner than cordwood. It produced less than 80% carbon monoxide and 75% fewer particles. This was a welcome change as we already are facing a severe environmental crisis.

What Could’ve Been Better?

Though the fire blocks were efficient and worked very well for us, we found some of the blocks crumbling. Once they crumble or break down into 4-5 pieces, it is difficult to use them to light up the fireplace. This is with some of the blocks in one box, while the others worked fine.

Pros
  • Quick and easy lighting
  • Dense, compact material
  • Suitable for indoors and outdoors
  • Clean and hygienic
  • Natural
Cons
  • Tendency to crumble
  1. Wildwood Kindling Kiln-Dried Cedar Kindling

If you are looking for an absolutely natural product, this is the one to go with. The fat pieces of fuel arrived in a beautiful hearth box, which we were reluctant to throw away. This product is convenient to use for multiple purposes, from lighting up a campfire to a fireplace.

  • ✔ Free of Dirt and Debris - Just because our wood comes...
  • ✔ Attractive Hearth Box - Approximately 1/2 cubic foot...
  • ✔ Kiln-Dried Western Red Cedar - Our cedar fire starters...

Why Did We Like It?

The one feature we loved was that the box was free of debris. We did not have even a single stone or small particles, and the box was efficiently packed with logs of pure wood. Dirt could lead to incessant coughing or a lot of unhealthy smoke, and thus we were delighted with this discovery.

The red cedar wood arrived bone dry, and this is essential, especially to start a fire quickly. Perfect for mountain campfires and beach fire pits, these cedar sticks need to be added with logs and charcoal. Strike a match and enjoy the glow!

What Could’ve Been Better?

The product functions well, but it is a tad bit too expensive. We were impressed with the wood, but good things come at a price, and so did this. If spending a little more is not an issue, the wood is a great choice to go with.

Pros
  • No added chemicals
  • No bugs
  • Free of dirt and small particles
  • Arrives completely dry
  • Suitable for all occasions
Cons
  • Expensive

Why Did We Like It?

The firewood lasts for 3 hours and can keep burning throughout your evening parties at home. A longer burn time gave us the space to attend to our guests and the food conveniently without spending all our time fixing the flame.

Also, these firelogs are perfect for outdoor use, too, and you can carry this along with you for tailgating or camping. Moreover, they take very little time to light up, which saves a lot of time and effort.

Lastly, it is UL approved for use in UL-listed factory-built fireplaces and is a Chimney Safety Institute of America accepted product. With two certificates under its sleeve, this product is safe to use.

What Could’ve Been Better?

We felt that the fire was a little too smokey, and the room would be filled with an ample amount of smoke if we kept all the windows closed. We recommend you to preferably use this outdoors where this problem does not arise.

Pros
  • Suitable indoors and outdoors
  • Burns up to three hours
  • Lights up quickly
  • Natural
Cons
  • Very smokey
  1. Pine Mountain Ultraflame 3-Hour Firelogs

Create the perfect relaxing retreat right in your house when the harsh winter strikes outside. Feed your soul with the warmth from the fire created by Pine Mountain Ultraflame Firelogs. They are easy to light up and burn faster and easier than most other products.

Why Did We Like It?

The product comes in two different sizes, and you can either choose to get the logs in two boxes or in the form of 6 long logs. This helped us a lot as different fireplaces require different types of wood to burn.

Truly evoke your senses with the warmth and goodness that these logs can provide as they are environment friendly and free of artificial additions. We thought the smoke was pretty clean and did not lead to any coughing among the house members.

Also, the flame is bright, and the fire crackles but in a controlled way so as not to throw out burning embers. This makes it suitable for camping where you can sit close to the fire safely.

What Could’ve Been Better?

The product functioned well, but there was a strange smell that came from the box. We did not quite like the smell, which felt like old and damp cologne. The smell vanished after the wood burned for a while. If you can ignore the smell, then go ahead and buy it.

Pros
  • Made from renewable resources
  • Comes in two different sizes
  • Environment-friendly
  • High quality
  • Creates a cozy atmosphere
Cons
  • Smells bad
  1. Enviro-Log Earth Friendly Fire Log

These logs catch fire very easily and burn for 3 hours at one go keeping the room warm and comfortable. The firewood is pretty easy to break, so as to achieve the desired size of wood needed to build a fire. With 5 lbs of the product, this lasted us long enough and is a good deal for its price.

Why Did We Like It?

The best feature that this product comes with is the absence of a strong odor. We have friends who cannot take the distinct smell of the cheap wood, and they have no complaints with this one, Made from high-quality firewood, this product is odorless and burns brilliantly.

If you want to do some outdoor cooking, which may include roasting marshmallows or cooking meat over an open fire, this firewood will enable you to do that. We hosted a winter barbeque where we all cooked and ate together, and the party was a hit because of this specific product.

What Could’ve Been Better?

There have been some paper and cardboard particles mixed in the coating of these wood logs, which flew up when the fire burned. This led to a lot of burning embers flying around. It happened initially for us when we started the fire and then stopped. This is the one thing we did not like about the firelogs.

Pros
  • Suitable for indoor and outdoor use
  • High-quality
  • Burns for a considerable amount of time
Cons
  • Presence of paper and cardboard particles
  1. Duraflame 6 lb 4-hr Firelogs

This product works well for brick made fireplaces as well as metal fireplaces. They burn clean and do not produce a lot of smoke, making them a desired option for many. We have two fireplaces in our house, and after a lot of experimentation, this is the one we settled with.

duraflame 6lb 4-hr Firelogs, 6 pack
  • Lights quickly – full flames in less than 5 minutes that...
  • Use in an indoor, open hearth fireplace or outdoor fireplace...
  • Burns 80% cleaner than wood
  • UL approved safety classification for use in UL-listed...

Why Did We Like It?

It is one of the cheapest products on this list, and we were pleased to have bought it. We remember our parents using this brand of wood. From then till now, the brand has stayed consistent with its products and the high quality that they offer.

Also, it burns clean, and we have never ended up coughing while sitting close to the fire. The smoke is clean and does not become a cause of any disturbance.

Further, it is a Chimney Safety Institute of America accepted product, and UL approved too. You can safely use it indoors as well as outdoors.

What Could’ve Been Better?

The product itself is a hit in our family, but the only problem is the weight of this box. It weighs 6 lbs and can be a task to bring up if you live several floors high, and the building does not have a lift. It may be a task for older people to drag it up too. Get someone to help in this case, and you are good to go.

Pros
  • Burns less material
  • Eco-friendly
  • Can be used indoors and outdoors
  • Has been safety checked
Cons
  • Comparatively heavier
  1. Wilson Enterprises Split Firewood

If you are looking for great smelling woods, the Wilson Enterprises Split Firewood is a brilliant choice to make. The hardwood is aged and dried before getting packed and thus burns very well when needed. Without much ado, let’s move on to the features.

Why Did We Like It?

This seasoned white birch firewood is sure to steal your heart away with the wonderful aroma of fresh wood. The company goes to great lengths to sterilize every piece of wood and dry them to wick away any form of moisture in the product.

Also, efforts are taken not to let any artificial materials mix with the lot to preserve the integrity of this natural wood. We had the fire burning in minutes after receiving the product.

This is a big box of wood and contains around 45 pounds to last you long. Winters here are harsh, and with this box, we could relax in peace for a longer period.

What Could’ve Been Better?

Comparing it with the previous products, this box is more expensive than the rest, but this is not really a problem as this box has relatively more wood. If your needs are less, then a smaller product would make more sense. This box is a good choice for anyone who wants to stock up.

Pros
  • Kiln dried to sterilize
  • Moisture removed
  • Completely natural
Cons
  • Slightly more expensive
  1. Kiln-Dried Kindling 1 Cubic Ft. Easy-Light Fire Starter

This product can build up a brilliant fire when used with some fatwood or paper to ignite efficiently. Cedar is one of the best types of wood that is suitable for kindling because it burns powerfully and fast. We got our pack of cedarwood, and here’s what we liked about it.

Why Did We Like It?

The best part about the red cedar is that they arrive absolutely dry with zero moisture content. Moisture usually makes it difficult to get the wood to burn and is a hindrance. Thus the fire could be lit up pretty quickly.

Also, with a no-mess storage policy that the brands follow, the packs do not have any dirt or debris in them. All that is there is fresh, natural wood to be burned. Dirt could cause respiratory problems in some, and we were glad not to have any of it.

What Could’ve Been Better?

They burn ferociously and do pop a lot, so make sure to get your screen closed after lighting your fire. This is the major concern we had with the product, but now you know what to do. If you are using it outdoors, make sure not to step in too close to the fire.

Pros
  • Includes 200-400 11″-long pieces
  • Zero moisture content for fast and easy lighting
  • No chemical additives
Cons
  • Flames pop a lot

Why Did We Like It?

Also, with 80% less carbon monoxide and 75% less particulate matter, the product is environment-friendly and causes relatively less harm. We have taken measures to curb any kind of degradation of nature from our end, and this helped us keep up our word.

What Could’ve Been Better?

We noticed the fire burned efficiently for 2 hours, after which it started producing a lot of smoke. This occurred twice, and we started to put off the fire the moment there was excessive smoke. The fact was a little disappointing for us, but now you know when to extinguish, and this should not be a problem anymore.

Pros
  • Paper-wrapped for clean handling and easy lighting
  • Burns cleaner than regular wood
  • Remarkable choice for fireplaces
Cons
  • Excessive smoke after 2 hours
  1. Premium Cherry Kiln-Dried Firewood

If you are looking for firewood, which will provide you with ultimate comfort without really leaving a lot of smoke, this product is a great choice. It produces very little smoke while it burns steadily and for long durations. We spent a night by a campfire, and the atmosphere around us was pretty clear, to say the least.

What Could’ve Been Better?

This one burned for a long time, and we did not have to add more wood occasionally. But it did take a little while to light up, which made the processing time-consuming. But once lit, the firewood burned perfectly well, and we have no significant complaints about it.

Pros
  • No artificial materials used
  • Safe to use
  • Long-lasting
  • Doesn’t produce too much smoke
Cons
  • Took a while to light
  1. Duraflame 2.5 lb 1.5-hr Firelog

True to its name, this product is exceptionally durable and will not burn out within half an hour, as most firewoods do. They can last for more than an hour at a stretch, which worked very well with us. We used it during winter when it was snowing outside, and it kept us all warm throughout.

Why Did We Like It?

The best part about this product is that it only takes 5 minutes to have a full burning fire. Leave a lighted match, and it blazes up the whole bundle in your fireplace in such a small amount of time.

Also, this wood has passed the UL approved safety classification and can burn in any UL-listed factory-built fireplaces. The controlled fireworks well and stands true to the burn duration without any variation.

They are eco-friendly and would not lead to artificial elements flying in the air with the ash. Further, it is super easy to clean up as there is only a little ash left behind after the wood burns out.

What Could’ve Been Better?

Though the fire is pure, we had a lot of smoke in the room when we tried to burn it in our fireplace. Our chimney took care of most of it, but the room was a little foggy. This is something we were not happy about.

Pros
  • Burns for an extended period
  • Can be used indoors and outdoors
  • Has been safety approved
  • Burns clean
Cons
  • Produces a lot of smoke
  1. Duraflame 4637 Crackleflame Firelogs

The best part about this product is that it burns quickly without the additional help of other materials to build a fire. You would not need to burn crumpled newspapers to get the wood to burn. We let the wood crackly away as it instantly made our room warm and toasty.

Duraflame 2-boxes 4637 6-pack Crackleflame Firelogs, 4-pound...
  • Crackles like a wood fire
  • Burns for up to 3 hours
  • Convenient; clean and easy to use
  • Creates just the right ambiance

Why Did We Like It?

This is one of the longest-running woods you will find in the market. It can last up to 3 hours, which is double the time taken in comparison with the previous product.

Also, it is convenient to use this as you just have to light up the wood with a matchstick, and it can then burn on its own.

The burning fire creates a crackling flame that is not too strong and does not throw out embers. The warmth is perfect for a cold day and will keep your house cozy, creating just the right ambiance.

What Could’ve Been Better?

We have been using this for a while though previously, we had no complaints. In one of the recent boxes, we found that half the sticks do not light up. This was an inconvenience, and we had to order another box immediately.

Pros
  • Easy to use
  • Powerful and lasts long
  • Creates a great atmosphere
  • Clean to burn
Cons
  • Some boxes have defective units

Firewoods Buyers’ Guide

Knowing about the products in the market is not enough. You must understand your needs and preferences before choosing any product. To remove all sorts of confusion from your head, we have listed down a few crucial points to be noted.

Burning Time

How long do you need the wood to burn? Are you looking at using it for your party guests to sit by? Each firewood has a different burning time, and you should look at those which burn the longest as it uses the least amount of wood.

Again, if you need the fire to burn for a short period, choose which type of wood you want wisely as the wood cannot be reused once doused. Longer burning woods also cost you less, and you can save up as well as use a lesser quantity of wood.

Lighting Up Time

If you are a newbie and have never lit a fire, go for a product that mentions easy burning where all you need to do is strike a match and throw it in the fireplace. Lighting a fire can take up a long time if you do not know how to do it correctly. Also, if the wood has any moisture in them, it will elongate the time period further.

Most of the products that we listed will light up in 5 minutes or less. But again, please read the instructions carefully or watch a youtube video as to how to light up a fire.

Level Of Smoke And Odor

Some woods produce a lot of smoke, while some do not. Always try opting for wood, which produces less smoke; otherwise, it gets challenging to use it indoors. For outdoor fires, you can still choose one which exudes smoke, but for indoors, try sticking to one which is almost smokeless and odorless.

There are some firestarters that come with a fragrance. You could also use one of these to get a pleasant smelling home.

Verdict

We believe all of the above products have some pros and cons, and it is a difficult choice to make. But if we have to choose a winner, here are our favorites from the list.

The Wood Products 9910 Fatwood Box is our top choice with sap-coated sticks provided in the box, which makes lighting up extremely convenient. Also, it is entirely natural and has no artificial chemicals in it.

If spending a little more is not a problem, the Wildwood Kindling Kiln-Dried Cedar Kindling is an excellent choice. It gave us big fat pieces of wood which were bugs and debris free. Also, cedar is a great material as it allows the fire to light up fast without causing hindrance.

You are now ready to sit back and enjoy a warm night in the middle of winter. Winter may be coming, but you are prepared.

Till next time, stay warm!
