Ton Salt Chair

The compact footprint of the Salt Chair makes it a smart choice for cafés or just about anywhere you need to maximize seating. Unlike chairs that have widely splayed legs, a Salt Chair can be placed side by side with another without wasting space in between. Its lack of ornamentation and unnecessary excess lends this timeless, Shaker-style chair a modern feel. And no, it’s not named after its color – until recently, it’s been available only in black. Rather, it owes its title to being as fundamental as the salt shaker on your table. Finished in a water-based opaque paint that really makes the chair’s profile pop, Salt is unpretentious, familiar and made for everyday use.

Knoll Cesca Chair

Three years after designing his iconic Wassily Chair, which is believed to be the first bent tubular steel chair design, Marcel Breuer created the Cesca Chair (1928). Named in tribute to his daughter Francesca, the simple design pairs the industrial age aesthetic of tubular steel with caning and wood. This chair is stamped with the KnollStudio logo and Breuer’s signature. Cesca chairs are manufactured by Knoll® according to the original and exacting specifications of the designer. Made in USA.

Design Within Reach Contour Chair

"Chairs and stools are mostly seen from the back, so that panel was crucial," says designer Hallgeir Homstvedt. In this way, the Contour Collection (2018) demonstrates a refined, yet striking balance of materials: a wood-sculpted frame that hems in and supports a gracefully upholstered seat and back. Designed collaboratively with Jonah Takagi, the pair developed a quietly recognizable chair with a slim frame and a broad back panel. Made in Thailand.

HAY J 42 Armchair

Danish designer Børge Mogensen worked as a cabinetmaker before studying furniture design at the Danish School of Arts and Crafts and training as an architect at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. His timeless J42 Armchair (1940s) features a slightly slanted backrest and widely spaced spindles, delivering comfort and a clean aesthetic. It’s now produced by the Danish design company HAY. Made in China.

Norm Architects Karimoku Case Study Chair

Bringing together the design philosophies from Japan and Denmark, the Karimoku Case Study Chair (2018) by Norm Architects delivers exceptional craftsmanship in a minimalist, inviting piece. Made by one of Japan’s leading manufacturers of wooden furniture, this chair features a comfortably curved backrest and woven paper cord seat. Made in Japan.

Knoll MR Side Chair

Ludwig Mies van der Rohe’s MR Side Chair was designed in 1927 as part of his contribution to the Weissenhof exhibit in Stuttgart, Germany. The chair’s cantilevered design uses tubular steel, then a technological novelty, to create an intuitively accessible and ergonomic seat. (When asked why he created chairs with generously sized seats, Mies van der Rohe allegedly replied that he designs chairs he’d be most comfortable sitting in.) The MR Side Chair, still made to his specifications, is perfectly balanced, featuring the material innovation and lack of ornamentation that epitomize the International Style. It was awarded the Museum of Modern Art Award in 1977 and the Design Center Stuttgart Award in 1978. The frame of this piece is stamped with the KnollStudio logo and Mies van der Rohe’s signature. This is the authentic MR Side Chair produced by Knoll. Made in U.S.A.

Moller Model 77 Side Chair

Møller furniture is made by a company founded in 1944 by Niels Otto Møller, a craftsman who "never compromised on anything," says his son. Even today the company uses old craft traditions like handwoven seats, which on the Model 77 Chair (1959) are made from a single 425-foot-long cord. The company hand-selects raw wood from environmentally friendly sources, and the final polish is done by hand. This is an authentic, fully licensed product of J.L. Møllers Møbelfabrik. Made in Denmark.

Carl Hansen & Søn Wishbone Chair

Using the best natural materials and refined steam-bent methods, Wishbone is made to last for generations. In 1944, Hans Wegner began a series of chairs that were inspired by portraits of Danish merchants sitting in Ming Chairs. One of these chairs was the Wishbone Chair (1949), also known as the "Y" or "CH-24," which has been produced by the Danish firm Carl Hansen & Søn since 1950. The son of a shoemaker, Wegner was trained as a cabinetmaker before attending the School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen, after which he began his career as an architect. Just three years later, Wegner started his own design office, and his work soon caught the eye of Carl Hansen. The Wishbone Chair fit what the Hansen company was looking for to supplement the heavier forms popular at the time. Made in Denmark.

Gubi Beetle Side Chair

The Beetle Side Chair (2013) is built on a sturdy frame that cradles the sitter in comfort from seat to back while striking an interesting silhouette between traditional and surprising. It was designed by Danish architect Stine Gam and Italian architect Enrico Fratesi, who founded Copenhagen-based GamFratesi in 2006. Available in a range of upholstery textiles. Made in Denmark.

Knoll Saarinen Executive Chair

The Saarinen Executive Chair (1946) was originally made of fiberglass but was later updated in polyurethane. The feel remains unchanged as the molded shell flexes slightly with the sitter. The contoured plywood seat is supported by metal or wood legs. This chair is Intertek Clean Air Certified for its use of low-emitting products. Manufactured by Knoll according to the original and exacting specifications of the designer. Backed by a five-year manufacturer’s warranty. Made in U.S.A.

HAY Palissade Dining Armchair

For the Danish design company HAY, brothers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec created the Palissade Collection (2015). Designed in color and form to integrate effortlessly with its surroundings, this collection stands out for its combination of visual simplicity and core strength. Elegant without being fragile and strong without being bulky, the Palissade Outdoor Dining Armchair is a sleek seat at the dining table. Made in China.

Emeco 111 Navy Chair

The form of the 111 Navy Chair (2010) derives directly from the legendary 1006 Navy Chair, which was designed for use on WWII submarines, where durability was vital. A key component of that strength, carried over to the 111, are leg stretchers, which typically are not found on plastic chairs and give the 111 a sturdiness to stand up to frequent use. The Navy Chair design constitutes proprietary Trade Dress. This is the authentic 111 Navy Chair by Emeco. Made in U.S.A.

Knoll Nakashima Straight-Back Chair

Geroge Nakashima was an MIT-trained architect who described himself as a "Japanese Shaker" – an expression of his interest in creating unadorned, functional objects. He also believed in pursuing a revival of lost crafts and practices, like traditional Japanese joinery and the use of natural materials. Nakashima was able to maintain the sculptural lines and fine craftsmanship of his Straight-Backed Chair (1946) even at the mass production level. Manufactured by Knoll. Made in U.S.A.

Case Eos Chair

When we asked Matthew Hilton to identify the common elements found in his work, he replied, "Functional, stackable, it has to store easily and be a good price." Fast-forward to today, and he’s still staying true to those ideals. Seeing a need for durable outdoor furniture at accessible prices, Hilton created the Eos Collection (2011), which is sleek enough to work in an indoor dining space, as well. Eos is lightweight – literally and visually – smartly proportioned and very comfortable. Certain to inspire leisurely outdoor living during the long days of summer, this collection was named for Eos, the Greek goddess of dawn and bringer of light. It’s constructed of powder-coated aluminum that won’t rust over time. The Side Chair is stackable up to six high for compact storage. Made in China.

Kartell Louis Ghost Chair

The Louis Ghost Armchair (2002) is a postmodern triumph of technical innovation and historical style – a reinvention of the classic Louis XVI armchair in a single form of transparent injection-molded polycarbonate. Louis Ghost is a robust chair with a medallion backrest for leisurely comfort. A sign of authenticity, this chair has a small Kartell logo in translucent red ink on its back. The injection-molding process leaves behind several faint artifacts that are perfectly normal, not defects. Made in Italy.

Knoll Brno Flat Bar Chair

The Brno Flat Bar Chair (1930) offers the comfort of an armchair without the stuffiness or bulk. The triple-plated chrome, cantilevered bar stock steel lends the chair its strength, while the padded full-grain Spinneybeck leather seat will only get better with age. The Brno Flat Bar Chair is a registered trademark of Knoll, Inc., manufactured by Knoll according to the original and exacting specifications of the designer. Made in Italy.
