Common Bedroom Layout Mistakes

Making some interior design mistakes is common and normal. After all not all of us are trained designers. #Too Much Furniture

It’s very easy to overstuff a bedroom. When you include the bed, side tables, wardrobes, drawers, mirrors, vanities, etc. it can all get a bit crowded. Especially if your space is tight, then it might be best to reconsider the typical bedroom layout and think about how to make the best use of the space. In general, the more furniture, the more cluttered and small the bedroom will feel. So, it’s best to invest in built-in-storage, or multi-functional pieces when you can. And only add what you need.

#Stuck To The Wall

With any room it’s very tempting to stick all the furniture up against the walls, however this is an interior design no-no. While it may make sense, this classic layout can quickly crowd your walls and leave the floor feeling empty. It’s also kind of cliché and can make the room feel much smaller. So, instead of crowding everything up against the wall try to float your furniture. Start with the bed. Pull it away from the wall, then the tables and so on.

#Clutter Around Bed

Cluttering around the bed happens easily. However, it’s not optimal. Make sure you have some room for bedside tables and that they also have some breathing space as to not totally flood the available space. If your room is smaller, then you can always switch the tables for some bedroom shelving or get rid of the table idea at all. It’s important to have plenty of space around the bed, so you can get in and out on either side comfortably.

#Bed Position

The best position for your bed may not be obvious immediately. However, since it is the focal point of the room, you need to plan where to put it before considering putting anything else. Designers suggest that in order to help a bed feel more relaxing it’s best to have distance between the door and the bed. This way you will feel safe and cocooned, ready for rest. For a bigger room you can put the bed against the wall with two tables on each side for balance. In smaller rooms you can create a bed alcove.

#No Rug

A rug helps bring together any room. Rugs add color, pattern, warmth, and texture to the space while also helping to ground the layout. So, a common mistake you can make is forgetting to add a rug to your bedroom. Even when layered over carpet, rugs have the ability to bring coziness and warmth. They are also a great way to create zones within the bedroom. By adding different rugs to different sections in the room you make it feel like there are rooms within the room, which is great as it makes small bedrooms feel bigger. Just make sure you get the right size rug. It needs to be able to fit all the furniture it’s going to be underneath.

#Bed Size

A common mistake many homeowners make is getting a bed that is too big for the room. A bed so big that there is barely any room for anything left. While you may not need a ton of free storage space, you will need at least a place to put a glass of water and if the bed is huge, you won’t have space for anything else. So, make sure to get a bed that is realistic for your room’s size and your needs.

#Not Enough Storage

It’s very easy to misjudge just how much storage you need in the bedroom. It’s common for people to end up with less space than they need. That’s why it’s always preferable to have a surplus of storage to grow into than too little. So, take into account closet space, drawers, shelves, and so on. We tend to collect a lot of things in our bedroom that we need space and storage for.
