A Modern, Farmhouse Retreat with Views of Mount Yotei
A farmhouse-style residence with a modern Japanese aesthetic in a forest in Niseko, Japan with views of Mount Yotei.
Makota Nakayama and his firm Nakayama Architects designed a retreat in Niseko, Japan with views of Mount Yotei. Set on an acre of land in a forest, Boukyo is a farmhouse-style residence combined with a modern Japanese aesthetic that blends perfectly with its snowy setting. The area’s heavy snowfall required a gabled roof, but to maximize light coming from the south, the architects staggered the home into two sections and gave them opposing rooflines.
A mix of modern and recycled materials, like black steel, Mortex and old wood, were used to help the residence to better blend with the environment, while offering practicality and durability. Inside, natural materials stand out, which is another nod to the surrounding landscape.
The interior incorporates furnishings that combine both Japanese and Nordic sensibilities, along with a number of pieces custom made by locals, Yoshitomo Design.
Minimalist windows frame views of the forest outside, as well as Mount Yotei, the Mt. Fuji of Hokkaido.
