How Art and Color Can Affect Your Mood

Color can have a different impact on individuals depending on variables such as one’s ethnicity, religious beliefs, gender, or age. Many businesses will decorate their offices these days in color schemes designed to inspire and motivate their workforce, whilst at home, one might want to look for a warmer and more relaxing environment.

How do colors affect your mood and how to achieve a particular mood? First, we need to explore what each color signifies.

The Connection Between Different Colors and Your Mood

Red

Traditionally a color signifying danger and passion, red is a color that stimulates your brain to provoke a reaction. Your eye is often drawn to objects that are red above other less extreme colors.

Blue

The most popular color, blue is a color that has a calming and relaxing effect on one’s mood due to its connection with the sky and sea. Be aware though that using too much blue, particularly darker shades can end up having the reverse effect, appearing aloof and depressing.

Yellow

Like red, yellow is a color that grabs one’s attention and is most often associated with happiness and cheerfulness. Yellow has the ability to energize and revitalize someone, but as with blue ought to be used with a degree of moderation since studies indicate that people lose their temper most often in yellow rooms.

Green

Symbolic of nature, green is regularly used as a balancing and stabilizing effect with more dominant colors. On its own green promotes thoughts of growth, health, fertility, and harmony. It is widely considered to be the easiest color on the eye which lends itself to putting one’s mind at ease.

Orange

Can be used as a more subtle and warmer alternative to yellow, orange reminds one of fruit, sunshine and encourages happiness yet does not overwhelm and provoke conflict as too much yellow can do.  Orange is also thought of as an energetic, stimulating, and enthusiastic color that works well in an inspirational environment.

Purple

A color that is very rarely seen in nature, appearing occasionally as a flower or vegetable, purple has protective and comforting tendencies. It is historically linked with exotic and prosperous places and events such as the rich Orient and royal coronations.

Brown

Brown is a color that suggests stability and comfort. It is an organic color, the color of the earth and like green is abundant in the natural world.

Putting Theory Into Practice – Adding Art To A Room

When choosing a piece of art, it is important to consider the room you intend to hang it in. For example, a sunlit beachside vista hanging in a yellow room may not have the bright and breezy effect intended and could end up overwhelming. However, place the same image in a green or brown room and the result is likelier to provide a warm and cheerful environment.

So adding art to a room isn’t simply a case of hanging a picture upon the wall. A well-chosen, colorful piece of art can transform a room by not only bringing a new perspective to space but bringing new light and energy too.

Consider where you want to bring new light to a room, and the mood you are trying to set. Do not overdo the same color, you can have too much of a good thing, and remember that warm tones can comfort and soothe, bright colors can provoke and inspire.
