How To Store Christmas Decorations

You can organize, store and protect everything from delicate ornaments to your whole tree by just following some simple guidelines. The first step in storing your decorations is you create a designated space for the items. If you want to keep track of everything they need their own “home”. Some things may be better suited to stay in the garage, others in the attic, some in the closet, and so on. But everything has its spot. Then it’s important to have something to place everything in, such as containers. Clear containers with labels are best as you can easily bring out each bin next year and see what is in which. It’s also best to store likewise items together, so you can make categories. But different items may require some additional care, so let’s see how to store them.

#Christmas Tree

Well, if you have a live Christmas tree, you surely won’t be putting it away for next year, but you will have to clean up and vacuum up the pine needles. On the other hand, if you have a faux tree, you will have to store it somewhere. If your tree came with a storage bag, it’s best to use it. If it didn’t then you can always keep it in a big canvas bag with flexible sides. Just disassemble the tree, fold the branches, and pack it in the bag. If you have no bag in hand, just take some saran wrap and wrap the branches. This will keep everything together and makes sure that the tree takes up less space.

#Holiday Lights

Untangling Christmas lights is a hell of a task, especially if you just shoved them back into their original box the year before. So, save yourself the headache and get some cord storage reels. These reels wrap up your lights just like a water hose, and it makes them super easy to use next year. It’s also pretty easy to store them that way, and they don’t take up way too much space. If you don’t want to get storage reels, you can use a piece of cardboard and wrap the lights around it. Then just place them within individual gallon plastic bags, so they stay tangle-free, or wrap them with saran wrap. This way you can just take them away in a box and use them when you need them.

#Ornaments

Before you actually store your ornaments, it’s important to give them a good clean, so they can stay beautiful for years to come. After you’ve dusted them off and cleaned them, it’s time to pack them up. However, since ornaments are usually quite delicate, we recommend getting an organizer, divider, some egg crate foam, or even a leftover cardboard egg box (but it won’t do a great job for big ornaments). This way the baubles won’t be touching or applying pressure to one another, so it minimized the chances of breaking or ruining them. We recommend the egg crate foam the most, but you can also pack them in ziplock bags sorted by color, kind, or however else you choose. Then just store them in a container and tuck them away.

#General Decorations

Other than the tree, there are also a lot of other decorations that might need proper storing. This goes for things like nativity scenes, antique trains, nutcrackers and so. The best thing you can do is get some bubble wrap or foam sheets and carefully wrap them in either before packing them away into the container. Then group similar items together in labeled containers. For example, mantle decor, home decor, and so on. It is also important to keep these items stored indoors.

#Outdoor Decor

Outdoor accessories and inflatables belong in their own original boxes and containers. If an oversized decoration cannot fit in a storage bin, then it might be best to place it on a storage rack with customizable shelf placements for easy access. On the bright side, outdoor decor items can be kept pretty much anywhere – the attic, the basement, a shed – as they can withstand weather changes.

#Dishes and Linens

Your beautiful embroider tablecloth and expensive seasonal dishes should spend the non-holiday season in an out-of-the-way spot. Store your holiday dishes and linens in an area where you don’t need constant access as you only use them once a year. Somewhere like the top shelf at the back of the cabin, in the basement, or with the other holiday decor. But if you are keeping them in a container, make sure to wrap them up well to avoid the chance of breaking. Use bubble wrap or paper.
