Open calls from Lisbon Architecture Triennale 6th Edition

The 2022 Lisbon Architecture Triennale, the theme of which is Terra, has announced three open calls seeking independent projects, competitive submissions from universities, and applications for the Début Award.

The Lisbon Architecture Triennale is an international forum held once every three years. Its mission is to promote architectural thinking, research, and practice through the debate, discussion, and dissemination of architecture. The sixth edition of the forum is curated by Anastassia Smirnova, José Pablo Ambrosi and Loreta Castro Reguera, Pamela Prado and Pedro Ignacio Alonso, and Tau Tavengwa and Vyjayanthi Rao, who will be led by chief curators Cristina Veríssimo and Diogo Burnay. The triennale will take place September 29–December 5, 2022.

Terra is multiplicitous in meaning. It encompasses territories, cities, and landscapes. It can signify the place where one belongs, or a continent seen from the sea. It may be an excessive or lacking environment, an element, or an obstacle. Terra is also a declaration of intent, proposing an evolution from the current linear, fragmented model towards a circular and holistic one. Understanding the complex connections between climate cha(lle)nges, pressure on resources, and socioeconomic and environmental inequities can only be served by a circular model. In this way, it is proposed that the future can only be created by intersecting and exchanging knowledge for coexistence, and that architecture can ground us as much as it can elevate us.

Ultimately, the program (which consists of three days of conferences, independent projects, four exhibits, four books, and three awards), will explore the relationships and systems that can enable change within a diverse set of socioeconomic conditions across the world.

Apply by November 1, 2021

Projects should have an independent and unique character and should stimulate, question, and enhance the 2022 theme, Terra. Proposals may be submitted for exhibitions, installations, workshops or talks, book launches, interventions in public spaces, cinema, or music events. Selected proposals will be part of the official Triennale program.

• Call for Submissions from Universities Award Competition

Apply by November 15, 2021

Universities are critical places for the production of knowledge and innovative practices. As such, the Triennale seeks proposals relating directly to the field of architecture (or its sister disciplines) and the 2022 theme. Applicants must be master’s degree level teachers, PhD thesis supervisors, or research group coordinators. Authors should be students enrolled in master’s degree programs or higher, and researchers must be affiliated with a research center and be PhD candidates.

Submissions may be project-oriented (urbanism or landscape architecture), technical (focusing on construction or material technology), or multidisciplinary (urban sociology or environmental studies). The aim is to stimulate individual and collective participation in the production of knowledge in, for, and on architecture in a cross-disciplinary way. The best proposals will be included in the official Triennale program.

• Call for Applications for the Début Award

Apply by February 28, 2022

The Début award is presented to an architect or practice to celebrate their achievements and encourage further career development. Further, the award looks to support new voices and forms of architectural practice and contribute to authors’ creative, intellectual, and professional growth at potentially transformative stages in their careers. Submissions are being accepted from architects under the age of 35, or any architecture studio with an average age under 35. Only one submission per applicant will be admitted, and all submissions will be evaluated by an international jury.
