PRISONS REDESIGNED! architecture competition is launched! [Sponsored]
Nearly 11 million people around the world are currently living in prisons, with a significant number of those still awaiting trial and sentencing for the crimes they are accused of. The impact of a person’s time in prison is felt not only by them, but by the community at large. Many prisoners are so negatively affected by their experience in prison that they are never able to fully rejoin society. In many developing countries, prisons are built to western standards, removing inmates from cultural norms, and that has a significant impact on their mental well-being. This also makes it more difficult for those who have served their sentence to function normally in society. Isolating prisoners, having them eating and sleeping alone, is often psychologically damaging and makes it harder for them to adjust when they are released. Prisons Redesigned! is searching for design submissions that look to examine and improve the architecture of modern-day prisons. The jury is looking for a sincere understanding of the role of architecture in correctional facilities, and how design can impact behaviour modification. Projects should consider the degree to which architecture can rehabilitate inmates, or, in contrast, how it breaks them down and makes them unfit for society. We are asking participants to design a fully functional correctional facility at a theoretical site in their own country. The facility should be able to house 600 prisoners and explore intelligent and culturally relevant rehabilitation techniques. The Prisons Redesigned! challenge is a two-part competition, pairing a design competition and “The Architecture of Prisons” essay competition (whatisprisonarchitecture.beebreeders.com). Participants are welcome to join either or both of the competitions. PRIZES 3 winning proposals, 2 special award recipients and 6 honourable mentions will be selected.
