Registration Deadline: Mar 15, 2023; Submission Deadline: Mar 15, 2023 Global Design News and The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design collaborate on the Relaunch of MoMA’s 1949 International Competition “Prize Designs for Modern Furniture + Lighting” for a second year in 2023 after its massive reception from international furniture and lighting designers and practitioners.In 1949, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) organized the “Prize Designs for Modern Furniture” to encourage the best of contemporary design by exhibiting the most notable examples in the furniture industry thereby stimulating production by manufacturers for the mass-produced market. Seven decades later, Global Design News and The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design are relaunching this historic event.In 2023, Prize Designs for Modern Furniture + Lighting offers a unique opportunity to present new furniture, lighting, and materials in front of the world’s architects, corporate end-users, furniture specifiers, and the general public.The new, reformatted program showcases the most outstanding new examples of furniture and lighting created by some of the most renowned international designers and produced and marketed by the most innovative manufacturers worldwide. Award Deadlines. The deadline for submissions is March 15th, 2023.Announcement of Shortlisted Submissions is May 1, 2023 and Winning Projects are announced June 1, 2023. Winners will be showcased in the book “New Modern Furniture + Lighting” and Global Design News Museum Exhibition at The European Centre, Athens, Greece, October, 2023 and presented during a Gala Dinner and Formal Presentation of the Awards in Athens, Greece, during October 6th-29th, 2023.Award Categories. The two major categories and the corresponding subcategories are as follows: Furniture: Seating, Chairs, Office Chairs, Office/Home Desks, Office Pods, Storage Units, Closets, Table Units, Wall and Ceiling Partitions, Built-in-Furniture, Fabric/ Textile Units, Floor and Wallcovering Units, Urban Furniture; Lighting: Table Lighting Units, Ceiling Lighting Units, Wall Lighting Units, Floor Lighting Units, Outdoor Lighting Units.Evaluation Criteria. The awarded products are selected by a jury organized by Global Design News and The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design. The jury deliberately uses subjective and aesthetic criteria in its selection.
