VDF products fair: Kvadrat Shade is a roller-blind system designed by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec featuring textiles by Kvadrat. Erwan Bouroullec will speak to Dezeen about the project in a live talk from 2:00pm as part of today's collaboration with Kvadrat Shade.

Kvadrat Shade is a subsidiary of Danish textile company Kvadrat. Produced specifically for use by architects, Kvadrat Shade's hardware comes in a rich palette of colours, which can be matched or contrasted with the different transparencies and textures of the accompanying fabric.

In this way, the blinds are able to complement the natural qualities of an interior rather than sticking out from the wider design scheme.

"The Kvadrat Shade roller blind solution works like a complete alphabet, you can form words with it," said Erwan Bouroullec.

"Unlike typical alternatives, it opens intriguing possibilities to elevate interiors by playing with tones, transparencies and textures. You can combine anything and get a great result."

When rendered in metallised fabrics, which were created in collaboration with Dutch specialist Verosol, Shade can also be used to regulate indoor air temperature and reduce a building's energy consumption by up to 15 per cent.

The hardware is modular and can be suspended from both the walls and ceiling so that the product can be used with all window types.

The complex motor, which was developed together with blind manufacturer Coulisse, is effortlessly concealed behind the facade of the hardware and can be automated through the use of light and heat sensors.

"It meets the longstanding need for an aesthetically outstanding, efficient and versatile roller blind solution, providing architects the freedom to create compelling interior themes, where all textiles, textures and colours are in perfect harmony," said Kvadrat Shade's managing director Christian Baum Blaakær.
