VDF products fairThe freestanding bathtub and basin created by Patricia Urquiola as part of her Sonar collection for Laufen feature a gently rippled exterior that mimics the way sound waves travel through water.

The products' ultra-thin, ridged design is achieved through the use of a material called SaphirKeramik – a kind of ceramic that maintains strength and durability even when its walls are only two to three millimetres thick.

"I not only wanted to work with the lightness of the ceramics, I also wanted to find a way to design its surface", said Urquiola.

"I liked the idea of using the little waves generated by sound. The texture on the outside of the washbasin bowls was modelled on these waves."

The collection also includes WCs and is unified by the gently curved D-shape of all of its products, which is rounded off into a perfect oval in the freestanding pieces.

A series of pared-back vanity units – lacquered in metallic copper, gold or titanium – can be integrated to add storage.
