Understanding Mushrooms: The Subject of Your Art

As far as characteristics go, mushrooms are a mixed bag. They can be both tasty and dangerous. Some species are great for cooking and are loved in kitchens all over the world. Others are poisonous and should be avoided at all costs. The delicate, long stems of morels and the bright, umbrella-shaped caps of amanitas are just a few examples of how interesting mushrooms can be. According to The Mycological Society of America, mushrooms have been an important part of Earth’s ecosystem for around 900 million years. Scientists have now named more than 10,000 different kinds of mushrooms, which means you have plenty of to use as inspiration for your art. In addition to their culinary uses, mushrooms play a key role in medicine and the environment. For example, they break down waste matter and help plants absorb nutrients.

How To Draw a Mushroom: An Easy Guide

Drawing mushrooms can be a lot of fun and really educational, much like drawing snails or elephants. Their variety in forms, textures, and colors offers a great chance for artistic development. Today, I will share with you a simple tutorial from @DrawinGeek on how to sketch a mushroom in a few easy steps. This tutorial is perfect for you no matter if you want to improve your skills, or if you are just starting!

Step 1: Draw the Cap

First, doodle the mushroom’s cap. This portion of the mushroom is usually shaped like a dome or an umbrella. Making it precisely symmetrical is not important as slight irregularity gives it a more organic feel.

Step 2: Sketch the Underside of the Cap

Next sketch the cap’s underside. Give yourself room in the middle of your dome form so you can afterwards add the stem.

Step 3: Add the Stem

Now draw the stem that joins the cap’s underside. To give the stem a robust look, thicken it somewhat at the bottom where it joins the ground.

Step 4: Detail the Cap

Detail the mushroom cap. Sketch circles or patterns of different sizes on the cap to give it some details. This is your opportunity to impart personality to your mushroom.

Step 5: Draw the Surrounding Grass

To place the mushroom in a more natural setting, finish your sketch by sketching some grass around the base of its stem. If you want, add color to your drawing. Feel free to try with different colors and shades of mushrooms as they come in a variety of hues.
