  1. Westinghouse WGen7500 Portable Generator

Number uno on today’s list is the Westinghouse WGen 7500 portable generator. Despite having a compact and easy to set up design, the high power output of this portable generator punches above its weight to simultaneously run most of your heavy-weight appliances.

Why Did We Like It?

Seeing the high customer ratings for this portable generator, we were compelled to test it ourselves, and we’re glad we did. Featuring a 420cc 4-stroke engine, the WGen 7500 is equipped with a robust steel frame and roll bars on the top for better stability. Additionally, the cast iron sleeves provide an extra layer of protection to the gas tank.

With all that external protection, it only makes sense that the in-built air cooling mechanism works to cut down the engine temperature, thereby reinforcing its lifespan for prolonged use.

Not only is the fuel tank placed at a convenient position for easy access, but the fuel gauge also allowed us to seamlessly monitor the fuel level throughout.

The WGen 7500 employs three start-up mechanisms – a pull cord, an electric push button and a remote key. This makes sure that you never fail to switch on the generator, no matter what the situation is.

Perhaps its most likable feature is the couple of GFCIs (Ground-Fault Circuit Interpreters) that break the supply of power at the slightest level of a ground-fault. This is a great tool to ensure optimum device protection.

What Could’ve Been Better?

When we say it’s a ‘portable’ generator, we mean that you can move it in and out, but probably cannot carry it by yourself. Weighing at almost 200 pound, a wheel kit becomes absolutely necessary for maneuvering this powerful beast. Also, it’s not the quietest generator available.

Pros
  • Colorful markings for easy set-up
  • Low oil shutdown system
  • Digital hour meter for maintenance reminder
  • Rubber protected outlets
  • Spark arrestor for safe outdoor use
Cons
  • Heavy
  • Loud
  1. DuroStar DS4000S Gas Portable Generator

For the second spot, we have the DuroStar DS4000S portable generator. An affordable and fuel-efficient power source, the DS4000S is a one-stop solution for all your indoor and outdoor power needs. For its compact size, this portable generator packs a punch!

  • POWERING EVERYONE ANYWHERE: Like all DuroStar generators,...

Why Did We Like It?

To begin with, the number of positive customer feedback drew our attention to this portable generator. The DS4000S has a DuroStar 7.0 horsepower air-cooled OHV engine that starts with 4,000 watts and delivers 3,300 running watts. Furthermore, to take care of overheating issues, the DS4000S has a forced air-cooling mechanism that reduces the internal temperature for long hours of functioning.

We absolutely loved the convenient positioning of its fuel gauge. While most portable generators make it difficult to read the gas measurements, the DS4000S provides for hassle-free monitoring of its 4-gallon gas tank.

DuroStar has included a lot many features to make this generator a noiseless and user-friendly portable option. Firstly, the power panel on its side is complete with a switch, voltmeter and circuit breaker for full user control. Secondly, the sturdy steel frame is equipped with four individual motor mounts to reduce vibrations effectively.

Additionally, its 3 power outlets – two 120V-20 amp and one 120V-30 amp – help you to draw power for multiple electronic devices simultaneously. Considering its modest price tag, we just can’t ask for more!

What Could’ve Been Better?

For an otherwise stable design, the lack of an angled funnel for fuel intake was a bummer. This resulted in substantial spillage while changing the oil. Also, the oil needs to be replaced every 20 hours, which can be a bit of a hassle.

Pros
  • 8 hour run time at 50% load
  • Minimal vibrations
  • Engine protection in low-oil situation
  • Side-handles for enhanced portability
Cons
  • Oil spillage
  1. WEN 56180 1800-Watt Gas Powered Portable Generator

The WEN 56180 gas powered portable generator is one of the most lightweight models out there. With a decent running capacity of 1500 watt, this power source is a cost-effective and compact option for anytime power backup, be it indoor or outdoor.

Why Did We Like It?

The WEN 56180 does not claim to be the most powerful portable generator, but in no way is it not worth your consideration. For starters, its 4-cycle OHV single-cylinder engine is extremely fuel-efficient. Similar to the DuroStart 4000S, it is also equipped with a forced air-cooling mechanism to protect the engine from overheating.

In addition to the air-cooling, we also get a low-oil shut off feature for increased engine safety. In case the oil level reaches or falls below the danger mark, the engine will automatically cut-off power to avoid damage.

WEN has taken special care to ensure that this portable generator is safe for outdoor use by installing a spark arrestor. What this does is that it reduces the occurrence of sparks, thus minimizing the risk of fire accidents.

All in all, this product is good enough to solve your average power backup need. Moreover, its sturdy steel frame and side handles add to its maneuverability.

What Could’ve Been Better?

The WEN 56180 is similar to the DuroStar 4000S in more than one way. Oil spillage is still a problem as the generator lacks a long funnel. We also think that in the absence of an electric start feature, easy ignition may be a task, especially in colder temperatures.

Pros
  • Motor mounted engine to reduce vibration
  • Noiseless operation
  • Permitted for use in national parks
  • 7.5 hours run time at 50% load
Cons
  • Pull cord start is tiring
  1. Yamaha EF2000iSv2 Gas Powered Portable Inverter Generator

The Yamaha EFV2000iSv2 occupies the fourth spot in our list. Its portable and lightweight design, combined with high power output makes this generator a popular choice in the category. Sure this isn’t a budget buy, but the hassle-free operation of the generator justifies its premium price.

  • Inverter system with Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) control

Why Did We Like It?

Yamaha is quite well-known for its small engine manufacturing technology for everyday appliances, and the EFV2000iSv2 is no exception. Its compact design makes this ideal for traveling and camping needs, as well as for home use. Apart from a self-cooling mechanism for its engine, the 4-cycle single cylinder also comes with excellent heat-isolation for stabilizing temperature.

As compared to the previous models in the series, it is armed with a number of advanced mechanisms for enhanced productivity and power stability. The best of the lot was this generator’s Smart Throttle feature for optimum fuel-efficiency. This system automatically senses the acquired power load to  control the speed of the engine accordingly.

In simple words, the engine uses only the amount of fuel that is required for that particular operation.

This portable generator is also equipped with a pure sine wave inverter system that delivers clean and highly stabilized output, especially suitable for power-sensitive devices like a DSLR camera.

With a 1600 running watt, its parallel capability allows you to connect the generator to another unit for twin power output.

What Could’ve Been Better?

The Yamaha EFV2000iSv2 lacks an LCD monitor for power tracking, which brings down the score of its user-friendly design. Not many users would like to pay extra for an otherwise simple accessory.

Pros
  • Controller system to manage multiple appliances
  • Oil-watch warning system
  • Automatic circuit breaker
  • AC, DC outlets
Cons
  • Absence of tracking monitor
  1. Champion Power Equipment 46539 3500 Portable Generator

For the fifth item on today’s list, we have the Champion 46539 portable generator. Convenience and high power output make this portable generator a reliable power source for those unwelcomed power outages. Fall back on this one to run your heavy-weight appliances without breaking a sweat!

Why Did We Like It?

True to its name and on the top of its game is this Champion portable generator. Its 6.5 OHv horsepower engine delivers 3500 running watt for simultaneously powering hefty appliances like television, refrigerator and gas furnace blower. Moreover, a set of iron cast sleeves protect the engine for extended durability.

The most amazing feature of this portable generator is its 3-way start mechanism. Apart from the more commonly found electric start and recoil system, the Champion 4653 also operates on a wireless remote control that works from 80 feet away. We tried all three options, and each worked with absolute ease.

Unlike the Yamaha EFV2000iSv2, this unit has an IntelliGauge function that facilitates three tracking modes for monitoring consumption time (in hours), volts and hertz.

We also liked a couple of added features that ensure maximum safety for the connected appliances. Its Volt Guard system is a notable mechanism that defends the devices against a sudden voltage spike. Similarly, each of the generator’s four outlets is armed with push-to-reset circuit breakers in case of an unexpected electric overload.

What Could’ve Been Better?

Perhaps the weight of this portable generator makes transportation a bit difficult. Nevertheless, a folding handle and 8-inch no flat tires solve this problem to some extent. However, it is not the most portable equipment.

Pros
  • Cold start technology for cold weather
  • Automatic voltage regulator
  • Sturdy steel frame
  • Includes engine funnel and oil
Cons
  • Noisy
  1. Briggs & Stratton 30651 P2200 Portable Inverter Generator

The Briggs & Stratton 30651 portable generator is an affordable and easy to carry power unit. Its low noise and eco-friendly output make this portable power station a suitable emergency generator that powers all your necessary appliances without a glitch. With a reasonable run time, this model makes the cut.

  • Parallel connector port allows connection between 2 units...

Why Did We Like It?

Our search for a mid-level portable generator brought us to the Briggs and Stratton 30651, and we are pretty satisfied with its performance. Its 1700 running watt may not sound like a lot of power, but is considerably efficient for its moderate price.

Apart from that, it does not compromise with fuel-efficiency either. An auto-idle feature works to automatically switch on and off the unit as and when required.

Talking about its outlets, this generator has a couple of 120 V outlets and one 12 V DC outlet. But what appealed to us the most is its USB adapter port – something which has been missing in even a lot of high priced generators.

Even though this unit weighs 55 pounds, Briggs and Stratton have not neglected its maneuverability. The sturdy H-shaped handle on the top of the generator makes it easy for two people to carry it around.

To top it all off, the generator also makes use of a quiet power technology that reduces the engine sound for a relatively noiseless operation.

What Could’ve Been Better?

Unfortunately, this portable generator too does not solve some of the earlier stated problems. In addition to the issue of oil spillage, we were also disappointed with the absence of an electric start.

Pros
  • Parallel connection ability
  • Outlets have circuit breaker protection
  • Low oil shutdown system
  • Fuel gauge for effective fuel monitoring
Cons
  • Starting the engine can be time-consuming
  1. Champion RV Ready DH Series Open Frame Inverter

Halfway through the list and it’s time to bring in yet another unit from the house of Champion. The Champion Power Equipment 10032, with in-built inverter technology, is a quiet and productive portable generator with a long run time for uninterrupted power supply anywhere, anytime.

Why Did We Like It?

Since we had already worked with the Champion 46539 portable generator, we were quite interested to know what this unit had to offer. The first thing that caught our attention was its Open Frame Inverter design.

To put it simply, the unit consists of an inverter that has been mounted on an open frame, which is more common to generators. This has been done to minimize the engine sound and improve its work power.

The Champion Open Frame generator also has a special smart economy mode. Much like Briggs and Stratton 30651’s auto-idle feature, this mode regulates the engine speed in accordance with the required load. This results in optimum fuel consumption for better service life.

Other than that, this portable generator has a similar set of features as some others in the category. So if you are looking for an upgrade, it won’t take much time for you to figure out its functions. Alternatively, if you’re a first time user, its user-friendly operation and productive power output will not disappoint.

What Could’ve Been Better?

This Champion portable generator is a bulky power source, weighing at almost 82 pounds. Further, the lack of wheels makes transportation difficult. You may, however, opt for a compatible wheel kit for easy maneuverability.

Pros
  • One-touch control panel
  • Clean and stable sine wave energy
  • 4-stroke OHV engine
  • Overload protected outlets
Cons
  • No electric start mechanism
  1. DuroMax XP4400E Portable Generator

The next entrant on this list is the DuroMax XP4400E portable generator. A powerful 7 horsepower DuroMax engine combines with a sturdy and lightweight frame to make this power unit a popular choice for recreational and professional purposes alike. Its multiple outlets host a variety of appliances with absolute ease.

  • Specifications: Noise level – 69 dB. Fuel tank capacity...
  • Run your generator with Gasoline for long lasting power.

Why Did We Like It?

Powerful engine and portability are two of the main factors why the DuroMax XP4400E has been included in our list. Its 7 horsepower 4-stroke OHV engine has a stable running output of 3500 watt, which is sufficient to run most of the heavy-weight appliances. And don’t worry about an overheated engine; its forced air-cooling system cuts down the internal temperature for better durability.

After working with a number of portable generators that were not well equipped for transportation, we were relieved to find this model which comes complete with flip-up handles and wheels. Since the engine is not too heavy in the first place, moving around this generator was definitely not an issue for us.

Apart from the voltmeter that enables the user to  monitor its power output effectively, the XP4400E also features a voltage selector or RV switch. Since it generates both 120V and 240V of power, the selector automatically varies between the two power modes as per the power requirement. What’s more, the generator applies circuit breakers for each mode to protect the appliances from a power overload.

What Could’ve Been Better?

The generator unit comes with a set of compatible tools that are required for set up and subsequent maintenance. Although it’s an appreciable effort from the brand, the tools are not sufficient for the needs. You may end up spending some extra bucks for a better tool kit.

Pros
  • Noise reduction muffler
  • Side control buttons for easy control
  • Low oil shutdown feature
  • Both electric and manual start options
Cons
  • May perform inconsistently at a higher load
  1. Honda EU3000IS 1A Gasoline Portable Generator with Inverter

Honda has come up with a line of super-quiet portable generators, and the EU3000IS 1A is probably the best model in the series. Its compact design and 3000 watt running power are ideal for operating a range of household appliances for your emergency and recreational needs.

Why Did We Like It?

Honda has been an ever-reliable brand for portable and compact power generators, and this model stands true to this reputation. Its small size holds enough power to run multiple refrigerators, televisions and microwaves at the same time.

Yes, such a wide range of applications will require a considerable amount of fuel, but the low oil alert feature automatically switches off the engine as the oil level nears the danger mark.

Besides fulfilling the fundamental duties of a generator, the Honda EU3000IS 1A also performs as an inverter. The inverter technology works to produce fuel-efficient output, that is both clean and stable. This means that you don’t need to worry about the more power-sensitive devices like computers when the generator is in use.

We were also quite satisfied with its low noise operation. Since this Honda generator is a part of the brand’s ‘Super Quiet’ series, it needed to justify the name. Even at its full load, the generator does not go above 60 dB, thus making it suitable for your camping trips.

What Could’ve Been Better?

Although the unit has a small size, it’s not lightweight. In the absence of a compatible wheel kit, it may be difficult for even two people to move this generator around.

Pros
  • Parallel capability
  • 120-volt power outlets
  • Eco-throttle mode for enhanced fuel efficiency
  • Good for overnight use
Cons
  • Heavy
  1. TACKLIFE Portable Inverter Generator

In recent times, TACKLIFE has earned a name for its efficient portable inverter generators. Why Did We Like It?

We love the number of things that this generator does for its otherwise humble design. Not only does it deliver constant stable power for a range of appliances, but it also takes care of various other aspects like maneuverability and eco-friendly power discharge. With a 6 hour run time, this portable generator is good enough to run the less power-consuming devices.

Next, we talk about its control panel, which also has multiple ports to  run the connected appliances simultaneously. Since it’s an outdoor only generator, the entire panel has a protector to keep away dust and mist from entering the equipment.

To aid its already lightweight design that makes transportation easy, the generator has a sturdy but soft plastic handle located at the top of the unit. Furthermore, this handle is equipped with an anti-slip rubber hand grip for painless and secure handling.

With less than 1.2% minimal harmonic distortion, this Tacklife portable generator is safe to use for power-sensitive equipment.

What Could’ve Been Better?

There’s no doubt that this portable generator is efficient and convenient for use, but it is an expensive outdoor generator. For this price, you may well opt for a generator that is meant for both indoor and outdoor use.

Pros
  • Weighs less than 40 pound
  • Low noise operation
  • Equipped with parallel outlet
  • Eco throttle feature
Cons
  • Expensive
  1. Generac 5939 GP5500 Portable Generator

The Generac GP5500 portable generator is one of the brand’s most sought-after models in the series. With a massive 5500 running watt, this power unit is a one-stop solution for household, camping and construction needs. A reliable and durable design is what makes the GP5500  likable emergency power unit.

Why Did We Like It?

To begin in, we appreciate the harmony that exists between its high-quality output and well-built structure. For a generator that delivers over 5000 running watt, a strong overall design is imperative, and the generator’s hardened steel frame does just that. Additionally, the engine is supported by motor mounts to minimize vibrations.

Though this unit is heavier than the average 5500 running watt generator, a couple of rugged non-flat wheels help in easy transportation. Besides, the handlebar can be adjusted to suit the grip and height of the user.

With four 120 volts and one 120/140 volts power outlet, the generator can run multiple devices at a given time. Furthermore, each of these outlets is equipped with circuit breakers to check the power supply. This feature comes in addition to an automatic voltage regulator for regulating the voltage supply.

Lastly, the portable generator has an in-built hour meter to remind the user about timely fuel change and maintenance. Given its strong frame and the set of user-friendly features, the Generac 5939 GP5500 is one of the most affordable units in its range.

What Could’ve Been Better?

It’s difficult to comprehend why the equipment lacks an electric start, despite having so many advantages for a lower price. Other than that, we could not find any reason to complain.

Pros
  • Splash lubrication for long service life
  • Low-tone muffler for reduced noise
  • Easy to access power panel
  • Consistent performance in harsh weather conditions
Cons
  • Sluggish recoil start
  1. WEN 56105 Gas Powered Portable Generator

WEN is equally famous for both high power and low power portable generators. As we near the end of this list, it’s only fair to also mention the brand’s 1000 watt portable generator. A small body and lightweight design amps up the generator’s mobility, while its decent run time provides undisturbed power supply.

  • Includes one 120V 7A outlet (5-20R), a circuit breaker, and...

Why Did We Like It?

The WEN 56105 is a true workhorse for adequate powering a range of smaller appliances. Since it’s a 2-stroke OHV engine, it requires a combination of gas/oil at a 50/1 ratio. Thus, you don’t need to worry about carrying a bottle of oil every time.

Its lightweight structure efficiently combines with the large and easy-grip handle so that you can carry it anywhere. In fact at only 39 pounds, it is one of the most lightweight portable generators.

However, it’s interesting to note that the relatively simple design is not devoid of the required features. For instance, it’s 120 volt 7 amp three-prong plug is all that we needed to turn on our music system at the tailgate. Furthermore, this little guy is capable of delivering 5 hour run time using one gallon of gasoline. For its capacity, this generator is really productive.

If you have specific needs in mind and don’t want to spend a lot on a high capacity portable generator, then this may well be your go-to power unit.

What Could’ve Been Better?

At 69 dB, this portable generator was a little too noisy for our preference. We did position this generator at a considerable distance from where we had gathered. But this is not much of a deal-breaker, given its reasonable price tag.

Pros
  • Circuit breaker for overload situation
  • Internal cooling system for engine
  • Built-in spark arrestor
  • Low maintenance
Cons
  • Loud
  1. Baja 900-Watt Propane Powered Inverter Generator

Our last pick of the day is the Baja 900-watt portable inverter generator. Again, with a low watt power output, this is another specific needs generator that stays true to its purpose. It’s simple design and uncomplicated operation comes with a set of additional features that make this generator a value-for-money deal.

Baja 900-Watt Propane Powered Inverter Generator, BAI911LP
  • 900 starting watt, 700 running watt
  • Clean power is safe for sensitive electronics
  • Auto-idle feature for maximum run time efficiency
  • Runtime at 25% load (175-Watt): 3-hours on a full 1 lb....

Why Did We Like It?

After trying out a number of mid-range portable generators, we were on the hunt for a generator that works just right to power the basic appliances. That’s when we stumbled upon the Baja Propane Powered portable generator, and we are pretty satisfied with its performance.

Though it’s running capacity is mere 700 watt, we were super impressed with its features that are mostly found in the more expensive generators. An all-out highlight was it’s auto-idle system, which moderates the engine speed and fuel intake in accordance with the required load. This facilitates maximum fuel efficiency and keeps the engine healthy for a long service life.

For it’s modest design and price, we were also surprised to find that this generator has a sine wave energy output. In other words, the clean power delivery is safe to run the more sensitive appliances.

Overall, the Baja portable generator has put in a lot of effort to make it more than just a simple power unit. The host of features brings its design at par with some of the more expensive and powerful portable generators.

What Could’ve Been Better?

Similar to the WEN 56105 unit, this power source also generates a lot of sound. Thus, you will have to calculate the appropriate distance for placing this generator.

Pros
  • Modified sine wave energy
  • Traditional recoil start
  • Decent run time
  • Cost-effective
Cons
  • Noisy

Best Portable Generators Buyers’ Guide

We bet that whenever the thought of buying a portable generator crosses your mind, the range of options makes you retreat. As if the plethora of models were not enough, the wide number of features make your task all the more difficult.

To help you out, we have listed down some of the most important features that should drive your buying decision. Read on to know more…

Power

The most important aspect of any electrical equipment is its power. Before you spend the big bucks for a portable generator, it’s essential to figure out your power requirement. The running watt power of a portable generator is the amount of electricity that it can generate to continuously power the said appliances.

If you plan to operate some basic devices for emergency or outdoor needs, we will suggest a portable generator that has a low running watt. However, a higher watt generator is recommended for recreational purposes.

Pro tip: you can opt for a portable generator that has a slightly higher running watt than what you need, to make room for any additional requirement that may come up in the future.

Sound

In general, the more powerful generators tend to be noisier. It’s a good practice to check on the dB level before you bring home the generator. For extensive outdoor use, we would suggest opting for a portable generator that has a lower sound level.

Fuel Efficiency

You will hardly find a portable generator that doesn’t claim to be fuel-efficient. However, you should look for some additional features that support this claim. For example, an auto-idle system is a great mechanism that controls the engine and fuel intake as per the required load.
