Sacramento architect John Harvey Carter designed over 400 buildings in Northern California throughout the mid-20th century—one of which is now for sale in the late architect’s home turf. The three-bedroom, three-bathroom residence at 729 Columbia Drive offers 2,232 square feet of interior living space spread across one light-filled level.

To omit corridor space, Carter designed the 1960s home with an expansive covered terrace protruding from the front facade. He used a similar design with many of his office buildings.

Carter designed the 1968 home for a family who went on to own the dwelling for more than 50 years. After hitting the market for the first time in 2020, the property has since been thoughtfully restored and updated, with much of the original design still intact.

Anchored by a drop-down fireplace, the living room's conversation pit also features shag carpet.

Among the home’s many highlights, some of the most notable include a wood-encased conversation pit with a drop-down fireplace, as well as floor-to-ceiling windows that connect the primary gathering spaces to a zen courtyard with a reflecting pool. "The formal living room, dining room, breakfast area, and family room all frame stunning views of the side yard and reflecting pool," says listing agent Susan Pillon of Nick Sadek Sotheby’s International Realty. "This is a must-see for fans of midcentury homes."
