From DMs to Silence: What Is Ghosting?

If you don’t know what ghosting is, then consider yourself lucky. According to Psychology Today, ghosting is the act of abruptly ending all communication with someone without giving them any explanation. It’s a phenomenon that is becoming more and more common in today’s age, as it’s quite easy to ghost someone through social media, dating apps, and texts. Usually, the person who gets ghosted is left feeling confused, hurt, and wondering what went wrong. It sucks quite a lot. Dr. Marisa Franco, a psychologist famous for her relationship advice on social media, says that ghosting can cause a lot of emotional pain. It makes people doubt themselves and feel anxious about future relationships. Not only that, but you get left without any closure.

Why Do People Ghost?

People ghost for a variety of different reasons. However, I don’t believe there is a good enough reason to hurt someone. But many people share that they ghost other people because they want to avoid any awkward conversations, they lose interest, they feel overwhelmed by the relationship, or they are emotionally immature. But no matter the reason why you got ghosted, it’s simply an unpleasant experience. The sadness and disappointment you feel when you keep checking your phone, yet the person you want is ghosting you, is heartbreaking.

How To Respond When Someone is Ghosting You

If you think you are being ghosted, then it’s important that you handle the situation with self-respect and clarity. Relationship expert and social media influencer Matthew Hussey advises to first give the person some space. You never know, they might be dealing with their own issues. After a reasonable time, you can send them a brief, calm message that acknowledges the silence that is happening between you. Text something along the lines of: “Hey, haven’t heard from you in a while. I hope everything is okay. I’m here if you want to talk. If you’re not interested anymore, that is also okay, just let me know.” This is a mature approach that shows both respect for yourself and the other person.

If they decide to continue to ghost you, then it’s time to simply accept the situation. I know it’s easier said than done, but you need to focus on yourself and move forward. Try not to dwell on self-doubt and blame. Instead, do things that bring you joy and surround yourself with people you love. Remember, ghosting is always more reflective of the ghoster’s issues than your own worth. So, keep your head high, and Ariana Grande says, “Thank you, next.” You need to focus on anxiety relief and more positive affirmations, rather than dwelling.

Take a deep breath and move on
